Roof Decking and Underlayment

Roof Underlayment: The Key to a Long-Lasting Roof

At Roof Simple, we believe that a great roof starts with a strong foundation, and that foundation includes high-quality underlayment. While shingles provide the first line of defense, underlayment is the hidden hero that protects your home from water, ice, and wind damage.

What Is Roof Underlayment?

Roof underlayment is a protective layerinstalled between your roof deck and shingles. It acts as a moisture barrier, preventing water infiltration from wind-driven rain, ice dams, and roof leaks.

At Roof Simple, we use a two-part underlayment system for maximum durability and protection:

Ice & Water Shield (Waterproofing Underlayment)

Synthetic Roof Deck Protection (Water-Resistant Underlayment)

Ice & Water Shield: The Ultimate Waterproof Protection

Ice & Water Shield is a rubberized, self-adhering membrane that seals around nails and prevents water from seeping into your roof deck.

Key Features:

100% waterproof – Protects against ice dams, wind-driven rain, and leaks.

Self-sealing – Bonds around nails to maintain a watertight seal.

Essential for high-risk areas – Installed in roof valleys, eaves, around chimneys, skylights, and roof-to-wall junctions.

Where We Install Ice & Water Shield:

Eaves – We install two courses (6 feet of protection) to prevent ice dam leaks.

Roof Valleys – Critical for handling high water flow during heavy rain.

Chimneys & Skylights – Protects against water seepage in high-risk penetration points.

Roof-to-Wall Junctions – Ensures a watertight seal where the roof meets vertical walls.

Synthetic Roof Deck Protection: The Second Line of Defense

Synthetic underlayment is a lightweight, durable, and water-resistant material that covers the entire roof deck.

Key Features:

Superior moisture protection – Shields against wind-driven rain and humidity.

Stronger than traditional felt – Won’t tear, wrinkle, or absorb water like outdated felt paper.

Enhanced safety – Slip-resistant surface improves worker safety during installation.

Breathable design – Reduces trapped moisture, preventing mold and rot.

Where We Install Synthetic Underlayment:

Everywhere else on your roof deck to provide a continuous water-resistant barrier under your shingles.

Why Underlayment Matters

Many roofing companies cut corners by using cheap felt underlayment or skipping Ice & Water Shield. AtRoof Simple, we use premium underlayment materials to ensure:

Your roof lasts longer – Prevents premature aging from moisture and rot.

Your home stays protected – Reduces the risk of roof leaks and water damage.

Your manufacturer’s warranty stays valid – Many shingle manufacturers require proper underlayment installation for their warranties to be honored.

Why Choose Roof Simple for Your Roof Replacement?

We NEVER cut corners – Every roof includes both Ice & Water Shield and Synthetic Underlayment.

We follow manufacturer guidelines – Ensuring your roof qualifies for full warranty protection.

Expert installation – Our factory-trained technicians install underlayment the right way, every time.

What You Need to Know Before a Roof Replacement

Roof Decking: What You Need to Know Before a Roof Replacement

At Roof Simple, we believe in honest assessments and quality craftsmanship. One key factor in a strong, long-lasting roof is your roof decking—the plywood or board stock that forms the foundation for your roofing materials.

What Is Roof Decking?

Roof decking (also called roof sheathing) is the wood layer beneath your shingles that supports your entire roofing system. If it's damaged, rotted, or improperly spaced, it can compromise the integrity of your new roof.

Does Your Roof Need New Decking?

Most roofs do not require a full redecking, but if your home has any of the following issues, you may need partial or complete roof decking replacement:

Why Use Our FAQ Page?

Water Damage or Rotted Wood

If your roof has had leaks, there may be soft spots or rotting plywood that need replacement.

Roof Simple includes 2 sheets of plywood in every project at no extra cost!

If additional sheets are needed, we’ll assess and provide transparent pricing before proceeding.

Gaps Between Roof Boards

If you can slide a quarter between the boards, your roof needs new decking.

Gaps larger than ⅛ inch indicate a structural risk that should be addressed before installing new shingles.

Old or Weak Roof Decking

Aging plywood can become brittle, warped, or weakened, making it unsafe for a new roof.

If your decking is sagging or showing signs of dry rot, it’s time for a replacement.

Rafter Spacing Issues (Common in Older Homes)

Rafters should be spaced 16 inches on center for proper support.

If they’re wider than that and you see bowing or sagging, an additional layer of decking is required to reinforce your roof.

How to Easily Determine Your Roof Pitch

How to Easily Determine Your Roof Pitch

At Roof Simple, we make it SUPER easy to figure out your roof’s pitch so you can get an accurate roofing estimate.

What is Roof Pitch?

Roof pitch refers to how steep your roof is, measured as inches of rise over inches of run (e.g., 3:12 means 3 inches of rise per 12 inches of run). For quoting and installation, you don’t need the exact pitch—just an estimate within one of the categories below.

Roof Pitch Categories

Shallow Slope (Less than 3:12)

Asphalt shingles cannot be installed on low-slope roofs.

Instead, materials like rubber or TPO are used.

Roof Simple specializes in asphalt roofing, so we’re unable to service low-slope roofs.

Medium Slope (3:12 to 8:12)

The most common roof type.

Often called "walkable" because it's easier to work on.

Steep Slope (9:12 to 12:12)

Requires extra safety precautions during installation.

Work may take a bit longer due to the steeper incline.

Extra Steep / Mansard (More than 12:12)

Found on mansard or Gambrel-style roofs.

Requires hand sealing for proper shingle installation.

How to Identify Your Roof Pitch

  1. Take a photo of your gable end (the triangular side of your roof).

  2. Compare it to a roof pitch chart.

  3. Not sure? No problem! Send us a picture, and our team will help you identify your roof pitch.

Class 3 vs. Class 4 Asphalt Shingles

Class 3 vs. Class 4 Asphalt Shingles: What’s the Difference?

At Roof Simple, we want to make sure you get the best roof for your home, and that includes helping you choose the right shingle type. If you're wondering about the difference betweenClass 3 and Class 4 asphalt shingles, you're in the right place!

What Are Shingle Impact Ratings?

Shingles are rated for impact resistance by Underwriters Laboratories (UL 2218 test), which measures how well they withstand hail, wind, and debris impacts. The scale goes from Class 1 (lowest resistance) to Class 4 (highest resistance).

Class 3 Asphalt Shingles

Class 3 shingles offer moderate impact resistance and are tested to withstand a1.75-inch steel ball dropped from 20feet without cracking or breaking.

Key Features:

Good durability – Can handle moderate hail and wind storms.

Lower cost – More affordable than Class 4 shingles.

Common residential choice – Provides solid protection in areas with mild to moderate weather risks.

Best for Homes in:

Regions with minimal hail risk.

Moderate climate zones with occasional storms.

Budget-conscious homeowners looking for a reliable roof.

Class 4 Asphalt Shingles (Impact-Resistant Shingles)

Class 4 shingles are the most durable and are tested to withstand a2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet—without showing any damage!

Key Features:

Highest impact resistance – Designed to withstand severe hailstorms, heavy winds, and flying debris.

Insurance discounts – Many insurance companies offer premium discounts for homes with Class 4 shingles.

Longer lifespan – More resistant to cracking, denting, and granule loss, which extends the life of your roof.

Better for extreme weather zones – Ideal for hail-prone and high-wind areas.

Best for Homes in:

Hailstorm-prone regions (Texas, Colorado, Midwest, etc.).

Areas with frequent high winds and severe storms.

Homeowners looking for long-term durability and protection.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you live in an area with minimal severe weather, a Class 3 shingle may be a budget-friendly choice.

If you’re in a hail-prone region or want the most durable, impact-resistant option, Class 4 shingles are worth the investment.

At Roof Simple, we can help you choose the best asphalt shingles for your home based on your location, budget, and long-term roofing goals.

Why Choose Roof Simple for Your Roof Replacement?

Expert installation – Our factory-trained technicians install both Class 3 and Class 4 shingles according to manufacturer specs.

Insurance assistance – If you qualify for an insurance discount with Class 4 shingles, we’ll guide you through the process.

Durability & protection – We install high-quality asphalt shingles designed to last and withstand the elements.

Enhanced Roofing Warranties

Enhanced Roofing Warranties: What You Need to Know

At Roof Simple, we don’t just install high-quality roofs—we make sure you’re protected for decades to come. That’s why we offer enhanced roofing warranties that go beyond standard coverage, giving you peace of mind and long-term value.

When investing in a new roof, it’s essential to understand your warranty options so you know exactly what’s covered and for how long. Let’s break it down.

Standard Manufacturer Warranties vs. Enhanced Warranties

Most shingle manufacturers offer a basic limited warranty that comes with their products. However, this coverage is often limited in scope and may not cover labor or installation errors.

Standard Manufacturer Warranty

Covers defects in roofing materials (usually for 20-30 years)

Limited protection—may not include full replacement costs

Prorated over time, meaning less coverage as the roof ages

Enhanced Roofing Warranties (What We Offer!)

50 years of non-prorated coverage on materials and labor

Covers full replacement costs (not just materials)

Includes protection against installation errors

What’s Covered Under an Enhanced Warranty?

An enhanced warranty offers comprehensive protection for your investment. Here’s what it typically covers:

1.

Material Defects

If your shingles fail due to a manufacturing defect, the warranty covers full replacement at no cost.

2.

Workmanship & Installation Errors

Many roofing problems stem from poor installation. Our enhanced warranties cover workmanship issues, ensuring your roof is properly installed.

3.

Wind & Weather Protection

Some warranties offer enhanced wind coverage—up to 130+ mph wind resistance, depending on the shingle type.

4.

Algae Resistance

Many enhanced warranties include coverage for algae staining, which keeps your roof looking great for years.

5.

Full Transferability

Selling your home? Most enhanced warranties are transferable, adding value for future homeowners.

Why Choose an Enhanced Warranty?

Higher level of protection — Covers both materials and labor

Saves you money — No surprise repair costs down the road

Manufacturer-backed guarantee — Not just a promise from the contractor

Increases home value — A transferrable warranty makes your home more attractive to buyers

Many roofing companies don’t offer enhanced warranties because they require certified installation by factory-trained professionals. At Roof Simple, we are certified installers of top-tier roofing systems, meaning you qualify for the best warranties in the industry.

Why Trust Roof Simple for Your Roof Warranty?

We offer the best warranties available – Ensuring your roof is protected for decades

Certified Installation – Our team follows manufacturer guidelines to the letter
